The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Wallace Murdock Hanes (ASN: 0-33384), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, in the vicinity of Amdol-Tong, Korea. At approximately 2300 hours on that date Colonel Hanes personally led a supply column up a treacherous mountain and enemy-infested road even though at dusk on that same day a platoon of friendly tanks had been heavily engaged by enemy forces in that area. Although other members of his command advised against such a movement and felt that the plan would fail, Colonel Hanes unhesitantly led the movement which was completely successful in feeding and re-supplying his companies, which as a result, were fully prepared to continue operations early the following day. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Colonel Hanes reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
