The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Antone W. Service, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 17 February 1944. Sergeant Service was a platoon sergeant of his Infantry company and his platoon was defending the most forward position of the company sector. When the enemy launched successive attacks, disrupting communications with the company commander, he worked his way to the company command post across areas under heavy artillery and machinegun fire. He directed accurate mortar and artillery fire made possible by his accurate knowledge of German positions, inflicting heavy casualties. Through his efforts the attack was repulsed and a threatening penetration by the enemy was prevented. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
