The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class David J. Rivette (ASN: 12967262), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 May 1944 near Careno, Italy. Shortly after assumed command of a machine gun squad, the position was attacked by enemy infantry supported b artillery and mortar fire. Private First Class Rivette, although mortally wounded in the initial attack, refused to be evacuated and led his gun crew in stopping the numerous attempts by the enemy to enter his position. Only after directing the fire of his squad for four hours of heavy fighting and after the enemy attacks had been successfully repulsed did Private First Class Rivette allow himself to be evacuated. Private First Class Rivette’s devotion to duty and gallantry under fire were an inspiration to his fellow soldiers and are in keeping with the high traditions of the Army of the United States.
