Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 172 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dennis D. Rice, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action on 23 May 1944, in Italy. Shortly after his platoon launched an attack against strong enemy positions, his platoon leader and platoon sergeant became casualties. As platoon guide, he assumed command and reorganized the platoon for a continuation of the advance. Though heavy mortar and automatic fire caused numerous casualties, he led an assault squad in the destruction of two enemy pillboxes, capturing 15 prisoners and killing or wounding 12 of the enemy. His gallantry and leadership were reflected in the successful accomplishment of the mission of the platoon and exemplify the high traditions of the American Army.
