The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Technical Sergeant Donald R. Renales (ASN: 20839346), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 February 1944, near Campaleone, Italy. During an attack against well-defended enemy positions the company radio operator was wounded and unable to continue his duties. Frist Sergeant Renales secured the radio equipment and moved forward through heavy machine gunfire to the company observation post. He there operated the radio, maintaining communications to the Battalion Commander and the other companies of the battalion. When the enemy counterattacked in force using tanks, heavy artillery, mortars, machine guns, and infantry, First Sergeant Renales remained in this exposed position. First Sergeant Renales’ gallant actions aided materially in the successful operations of the battalion and are in keeping with the highest traditionist of the military service.
