The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Hurd L. Reeves (ASN: 0-441991), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the Anzio Beachhead during the period 16 to 20 February 1944. Captain Reeves was commanding Company C on 26 February when ordered to organize defensive lines. The orders were accomplished swiftly and efficiently by Captain Reeves, working under heavy fire and with a badly depleted unit. The positions he established proved to be of the highest quality and made possible the stabilization of the lines by Company C until the unit was relieved on 28 February. Captain Reeves was continually on the front lines with his men and by his example stimulated his men to heroic resistance in preserving a critical defensive position. Captain Reeves is worthy of the highest praise for his leadership and courage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
