The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Oren Lee Peters (ASN: 20824470), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, *** Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy nbear Aprilia, Italy, on 16 February 1944. When his battalion radio truck was demolished by a direct artillery hit, three men, including the message center chief, were killed and many were injured, and Sergeant Peters, Wireman, was stunned by the concussion. When he recovered consciousness he rendered emergency first aid to the wounded, then crossed an open field under artillery fire to bring additional aid from the aid station. To restore communications with the front lines, he crossed open terrain under fire to obtain a radio which he operated until relieved. He then returned to his regular duties. Sergeant Peter’s initiative and courage exemplify the high traditions of the United States Army.
