The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Dale D. McFarlin, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy in January 1944. In the critical sage of the establishment of the Anzio beachhead, during a determined enemy counterattack against his Infantry Regiment, First Sergeant McFarlin discovered that personnel for supplying the weapons of his company with ammunition were not available. He obtained the aid of two other infantrymen and supplied the weapons with ammunition. Throughout the night while under constant enemy artillery, mortar, and tank fire, he supervised the supply. When his two assistants were knocked out by concussion from tank shells landing nearby, he carried on alone without rest or relief. He enabled the company to repulse the enemy and assist the Battalion in maintaining its position. First Sergeant McFarlin’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
