The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Johnnie A. Martin, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 10 February 1944. When his squad was attached to an Infantry Company as flank protection, Sergeant Martin, returning to his squad from the company Command Post, found them surrounded by the enemy. He fought through the German line, rejoined his men, then directing their movements and fire, he began infiltrating through the enemy lines. Sergeant Martin’s quick estimate of the situation enabled him to reestablish contact without losing a man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
