The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Charles Bishop Lyman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Dutch New Guinea, in April 1944. Colonel Lyman led his regiment in the capture of the airfield at Hollandia. Disregarding his personal safety, he oved forward with advance elements, personally directing front line units in contact with the enemy while under fire, and accomplished his mission. Colonel Lyman’s absolute disregard for personal safety, his voluntary actions and willingness to be of service above and beyond the call of duty, reflect highest credit upon himself and the military forces of the United States.
