Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter F. Nechey (ASN: 0-440609), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. While under heavy enemy machine gun fire, Lieutenant Nechey advanced with his 37-mm. anti-tank platoon over rugged mountainous terrain. He placed his guns in such a manner that his platoon was able to deliver extremely effective fire upon the enemy positions; thus contributing in a large measure to the demoralization and destruction of the enemy. Lieutenant Nechey’s excellent tactical judgment resulted in not a single casualty in his platoon during this engagement. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
