The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward C. Heims, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, from 17 to 21 February 1944. Sergeant Heims maintained observation for Infantry 81-mm. mortars throughout a four day period. Though his observation post was subjected to heavy enemy shelling and sustained several direct hits, he remained on duty under these hazardous conditions conducting fire which was instrumental in breaking up several attacks against the battalion position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
