The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jim Hair (ASN: 20828237), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, *** Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 September 1943 near Oliveto, Italy. When his platoon came under fire from an enemy machine gun, Sergeant Hair, platoon sergeant, moved along under fire and destroyed the hostile machine gun nest with hand grenades. Later, when he was ordered to adjust his position, he remained with four others to cover the movement. Although attacked shortly thereafter by a strong force, they held their position, killing twelve of the enemy. Sergeant Hair’s gallantry and leadership reflect the high traditions of the Armed Forces.
