The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold Anthony Foster (ASN: 0-1310701), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 March 1944, near Carano, Italy. Second Lieutenant Foster was leader of a patrol operating in enemy territory, with the mission of locating and destroying enemy machine gun positions, and observing other enemy installations. Second Lieutenant Foster working his way over six hundred yards of open terrain, through enemy mine fields, protective wiring, and heavy machine gun fire, let his patrol to within thirty feet of an enemy machine gun nest. Leaving the rest of his patrol to cover his movements, Second Lieutenant Foster charged the enemy position destroying the machine gun and killing the occupants. Second Lieutenant Foster then observed other enemy emplacements and defensive positions, reporting their location to Battalion Headquarters on his return. The information proved invaluable in later operations. The gallantry and skillful leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Foster reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
