Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 75 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James C. Flood, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy on 21 February 1944. Sergeant Flood acted as platoon leader of an Infantry rifle platoon improvised from the antitank personnel of his battalion. During a sustained attack he organized his platoon in a defensive position. He maintained close personal supervision and control over his men, moving among them under heavy mortar and artillery fire. His platoon held its position until relieved 24 hours later, although it suffered 18 casualties in that period. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
