The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert E. Fitzpatrick, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, during the period 17 to 21 February 1944. Staff Sergeant Fitzpatrick maintained observation for Infantry 81-mm. mortars throughout a four-day period. Though his observation post was subjected to heavy enemy shelling and sustained several direct hits, he remained on duty under these hazardous conditions conducting fire which was instrumental in breaking up several attacks against his battalion position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
