The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James C. Donaghey, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Aprilia, Italy, on 29 May 1944. When an enemy force of approximately two companies staged a counterattack during the allied attack toward Rome, Captain Donaghey skillfully led his company in driving off the enemy who had penetrated friendly lines. Advancing with his leading elements, Captain Donaghey struck the enemy with such force and aggressiveness that the penetrating forces were temporarily halted. After running across a heavily shelled area to bring tank fire to bear on enemy strongpoints, Captain Donaghey formed his company and led the men in a vigorous and successful attack to drive back the enemy. Through personal example in close combat and by gallant leadership, Captain Donaghey inspired his company to inflict heavy casualties and repel a superior enemy force, and enabled friendly units to capture their objectives. Captain Donaghey’s courage and exemplary leadership reflect the high traditions of the Army of the United States.
