The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert H. Doherty, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action in Italy on 17 February 1944. Acting as Infantry mortar observer from a position in the upper story of a house, Lieutenant Doherty brought effective fire to bear upon the enemy and refused to leave his observation post although previously wounded in the leg and despite heavy enemy artillery fire falling on and in the vicinity of his position. Realizing that his evacuation would force a noncommissioned officer to leave his place at the guns and take over the task of observation at a time when every available man was needed, he refused to abandon his position until it became obvious that it was in imminent danger of being taken. Unable to walk because of his wound, he was carried from the wrecked building only a few moments before the position was overrun by enemy forces. Lieutenant Doherty’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
