The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] Earl W. Buchanan (ASN: 0-21325), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 July 1950, near Tangjo-ni, Korea, Major Buchanan’s regiment was ordered to secure new positions during a night-long engagement with a powerful hostile force. Advancing to supervise the tactical move, he stationed himself at a road junction through which all the units were required to pass. Although the intersection was subjected to heavy machine gun, Mortar, and artillery fire, he remained in his exposed position for several hours and, by precise orders and expert timing, effected the rapid and orderly displacement of the regiment. Major Buchanan’s courage, technical ability and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
