The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Buford E. Boyd (ASN: 0-256610), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 274th Infantry Regiment near Wingen, France, on 4 January 1945. Major Boyd’s battalion was ordered to drive an entrenched enemy from the town of Wingen. Major Boyd placed himself with the leading elements of the battalion in order to closely supervise the attack. In the face of short range rifle and machine gun fire he maintained the rapid advance of the leading elements. Other attacking units, inspired by his gallant example, pushed rapidly forward to overwhelm the enemy and drive them from their entrenchments. Major Boyd’s courage and outstanding leadership secured dominating terrain from a strong enemy with the minimum of casualties to his own unit. His actions reflect much credit upon himself and his unit.
