The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Richard B. Blanks, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France on 13 June 1944. During an attack, a half-track sustained hits, one member of the crew was killed, and two others wounded. The camouflage net and two gasoline tanks, which had been punctured, were set afire. This vehicle was not only under heavy artillery fire but was also under the direct fire of an 88-mm. gun operating from a fortified point about 1,5000 yards away. Despite the heavy fire and the imminent danger of the ammunition on the vehicle exploding, Private Blanks went forward immediately in company with another soldier, disregarding the great personal risk involved and extinguished the blaze, saving the lives of the remainder of the crew as well as the vehicle itself. It was due to the unswerving courage and prompt workmanship of Private Blanks that the members of the squad owe their lives. This is a fine example of that quick action, initiative, and devotion to duty which exemplifies the highest traditions of the military service.
