Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 86 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Richard A. Young (ASN: 35881758), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 September 1944, in Hofen, Germany. While in a defensive position, Private First Class Young’s unit was subject to a fierce enemy counterattack, the enemy proceeding in penetrating the front line positions in one sector. Seeing a platoon of enemy Infantry coming down the street towards the Battalion Command Post, Private First Class Young picked up his rifle and went directly into the street alone. Opening fire on the approaching enemy, he succeeded in killing three and wounding six, causing the remainder of the platoon to flee. Private First Class Young’s aggressive initiative, complete disregard for personal safety, and courageous actions were a credit to himself and to the Armed Forces of the United States.
