The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Samuel G. York (ASN: 34773703), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 12 October 1944. Attempting to make contact with an adjacent supporting company, Staff Sergeant York’s patrol encountered a large enemy force which had infiltrated behind the lines. Engaging the enemy in a fire fight, the numerically superior enemy forced Staff Sergeant York to withdraw his patrol. Notifying his unit of the situation, he led his company through a small neck of woods 20 yards to the enemy front, creeping upon the enemy with secrecy and made contact with the unit on the flank. A joint attack was executed which destroyed the enemy group. Then movind forward with his platoon, Staff Sergeant York assisted in the capture of several refileman defending a pillbox. Learning that the pillbox was still occupied, he assaulted the emplacement with hand grenades and a Browning Automatic Rifle and captured one German officer and five enlisted men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
