The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Dwight M. Wilson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 9th Infantry Division, in action in Normandy, France, on 12 July 1944, during the drive across Cherbourg peninsula. Private Wilson’s regiment, which spearheaded the 9th Divisions drive across the peninsula, was held up near the town by a small pocket of enemy resistance, consisting of a captured American 57-mm. anti-tank gun and supporting machine gun and rifle fire. Private Wilson and a comrade, with utter disregard for their own personal safety, dashed across an open road under enemy fire to a positions from which the gun could be engaged by fire from their Browning Automatic Rifles. Although their position was demolished by the same anti-tank gun fire, they continued their firing, forcing the enemy to abandon their gun and allow the regiment to proceed forward to its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
