The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Edward White, United States Army, for most distinguished gallantry on 27 April 1899, while serving with Company B, 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, in action at Calumpit, Luzon, Philippine Islands. Private White swam the Rio Grande de Pampanga in face of the enemy’s fire and fastened a rope to occupied trenches, thereby enabling the crossing of the river and the driving of the enemy from his fortified position.
