Board Serial 175 (February 16, 1951)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Vice Admiral Arthur Dewey Struble (NSN: 0-9122), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Commander United States SEVENTH Fleet during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 27 June 1950 to 1 January 1951. Thoroughly understanding the unusual military situation confronting our armies, Vice Admiral Struble quickly and skillfully planned for the most effective employment of large Naval surface and air forces. He established and maintained a schedule of air strikes and shore bombardments against the enemy which served in a great measure to relieve the pressure being exerted against friendly ground forces. As Commander of the principle Naval forces afloat in the Far East, he vigorously executed the broad Naval phases of the Inch’on and Wonsan operations, carried out with marked success despite extreme difficulties imposed by treacherous current and tidal conditions as well as mine-obstructed waters in the target areas. Vice Admiral Struble’s inspiring leadership, professional ability and devotion to duty as exemplified by the brilliant performance of forces under his command reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Rear Admiral Arthur Dewey Struble (NSN: 0-9122), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Commander Amphibious Group NINE, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Philippine Islands Area, from January to 15 August 1945. As Attack Group Commander, Rear Admiral Struble demonstrated brilliant leadership and resourcefulness in the tactical execution of operational plans for the amphibious landings at Zimbales, Bataan and Corregidor on the Island of Luzon; on the Islands of Negros and Panay; and at Macajalar Bay on the Island of Mindanao. His judgment in the preparation of assault plans, his tact in coordinating the joint operations of the Allied Military Forces, and his professional skill in the discharge of his duties were major factors in the success of the Philippine Islands operation and in the ultimate regaining of complete control in the Southwest Pacific Area. By his military acumen and devotion to duty, Rear Admiral Struble rendered services of inestimable value to his country and his conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the United States Naval Service.

Headquarters, EIGHTH U.S. Army, Korea, General Orders No. 722 (September 25, 1951)The President of the United States of America, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Vice Admiral Arthur Dewey Struble (NSN: 0-9122), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as Commander, SEVENTH Fleet, U.S. Navy, in action against enemy forces in the Republic of Korea from 15 September to 19 October 1950. As a direct result of his bold execution of plans in smashing enemy shore defenses and providing close air coverage, the spectacular Inchon Invasion, one of the most difficult ever attempted because of extreme tides, was brilliantly effected with minimum loss of landing forces. Admiral Struble’s personal bravery, in evidence at all times, was particularly notable curing the mine-sweeping operations at Wonsan. There, over a prolonged period, he personally supervise the work of eliminating this navigational menace, acquiring first hand knowledge to insure success of the operations and to encourage the mine-sweeping group by his presence. Through his conspicuous courage and daring execution of brilliant tactical naval operations, Admiral Struble made an invaluable contribution to the cause of the United Nations in Korea.

Department of the Army, General Orders No. 2 (September 26, 1947)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Rear Admiral Arthur Dewey Struble (NSN: 0-9122), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during the period 30 August through 17 November 1944 as an Amphibious Attack Group Commander during operations against enemy Japanese Forces in the Philippine Islands during the liberation of that area from Japanese domination. Rear Admiral Struble demonstrated exceptional judgment in the preparation of assault plans for the coordination of the joint operations of the Allied Military Forces involved, and rendered outstanding services in leading the Task Group which made the initial entry into Leyte Gulf and in securing the islands controlling the entrance. He exercised exceptional foresight, tact and competence in welding the Army and Navy Staffs into a single effective organization, and demonstrated superior leadership and resourcefulness in the tactical execution of operations against the enemy. Under his most capable direction shore batteries and fortifications were accurately pounded, Army Forces put ashore with speed and precision and sea supply lines of the embattled ground units resourcefully protected. Through his exceptional professional ability, leadership and devotion to duty Admiral Struble made a significant contribution to the success of combined operations in the Southwest Pacific Area.
