The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Fred Q. Richardson (ASN: 34148824), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 July 1944, in the vicinity of Pte Hairie, France. While in a defensive position, Sergeant Richardson’s company was subjected to an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage. The ammunition of a gun section received a direct hit and was set afire by an enemy shell. With complete disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Richardson immediately went to the ammunition stocks and removed the 105-mm. shells from the blaze. His aggressive initiative and prompt action prevented the shells from exploding and causing numerous casualties. Sergeant Richardson’s courageous actions and complete disregard for personal safety were a credit to himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
