The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Peter Puhar, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944 in the vicinity of Le Neritiere, France. Subjected to a fierce enemy counterattack, Private First Class Puhar’s company withdrew temporarily for the purpose of reorganization. With complete disregard for personal safety, Private First Class Puhar and another man voluntarily moved forward into enemy-held territory to take care of the casualties. Although constantly exposed to heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, the two men made repeated trips into and through this fire-swept area, administering first aid and evacuating the wounded. Private First Class Puhar’s courageous actions were instrumental in saving the lives of many of the wounded and were a credit to himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
