The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Thomas A. E. Moseley, Jr. (ASN: 0-23441), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 July 1944, in the vicinity of La Courageously Des Landes, France. Advancing against strongly fortified enemy positions, Major Moseley and two enlisted men accompanied the Regimental Commander in an attempted infiltration forward in the heavily wooded terrain. Seeing one of the men fall wounded, Major Moseley voluntarily exposed himself to direct enemy observation and intense enemy mortar, machine pistol and small arms fire to go to the aid of the wounded man. Evacuating him to a point of safety, he returned to his forward exposed position. Moving forward, he silenced a machine pistol by throwing a hand grenade into the emplacement. When the Regimental Commander fell seriously wounded in an exposed area, he once again exposed himself to the heavy fire to evacuate the wounded man. Major Moseley’s complete disregard for personal safety and courageous actions were a credit to himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
