The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General (Medical Corps) Crawford Fountain Sams (ASN: 0-18261), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Public Health and Welfare Officer, United Nations Command, while personally inspecting conditions in Korea, during the period 29 September to 16 October 1950. Voluntarily, and with complete disregard for his safety, General Sams traveled overland through guerilla-infested areas to obtain information vital to the treatment and disposition of wounded civilian personnel. To estimate agricultural potential and to gain that knowledge of conditions prevalent in civilian communities necessary for resolving complex public health and welfare problems, General Sams made aerial reconnaissance flights in light unarmed aircraft within the range of hostile fire over enemy dominated areas. General Sams, through his inspiring devotion to duty, effected provision of essential subsistence and medical supplies contributing materially to the United Nations efforts in Korea, reflecting great credit on himself and upholding the highest traditions of the military service.
