The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas V. Mullen (ASN: 0-1325590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in ****, France, on 10 October 1944. While engaged in mopping up operations in the village of ****, France, Lieutenant Mullen, a platoon leader, learned that an enemy artillery observer and several snipers armed with a machine gun were located atop a high building affording excellent observation. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Mullen climbed to the rooftop of an adjoining building, crawled along the roof with a light machine gun to a point within twenty yards of the enemy group, and opened fire, killing all four of the Germans. His courageous initiative and complete disregard for personal safety resulted in the elimination of the focal point of enemy resistance in the village. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
