The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel M. Layman (ASN: 33310838), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, , *** Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on ** March 1943. When the ** Battalion was ordered to attack Hill ***, east of *****, Tunisia, Sergeant Layman, with the commanding officer of the Combat Team and other members of the command ground started to Hill ***. When fired upon by heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire, Sergeant Layman, with utter disregard for personal safety, assisted in getting the command group under cover. Sergeant Layman was constantly under heavy enemy fire, throughout his numerous dispatches forward with the commanding officer, to positions where elements of the Combat Team were located. His bravery and devotion to duty was not only outstanding, but an inspiration to all member of his command. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Layman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
