Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 76 (May 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Luwayne M. Larson (ASN: 37580950), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 March 1945, in the vicinity of Katherinen, Germany. While in a defensive position at a vital road junction, Private First Class Larson’s squad was subjected to a fierce attack by three enemy tanks and a self-propelled cannon. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Larson voluntarily exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in order to bring effective rocket fire upon the advancing enemy force. Delivering accurate rocket fire upon the enemy, he destroyed one tank and the self-propelled gun. With complete disregard for personal safety, he remained at his precarious position until fatally wounded by enemy machine gun fire. Private First Class Larson’s aggressive initiative, devotion to duty, and courageous actions were a credit to himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
