Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John F. Lannon (ASN: 0-1166761), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 82d Airborne Division, in action in the vicinity of **** on ** ***, 1943. First Lieutenant Lannon, *** Field Artillery, accompanied the foremost infantry elements in the attack. Because of the nature of the terrain it was impossible to obtain effective artillery fire. First Lieutenant Lannon proceeded beyond the infantry to a point of vantage, from which place he was able to direct effective artillery fire against the enemy position. During this time he was exposed to heavy enemy small arms and artillery fire. By his courageous action he precipitated the break up of the enemy defenses. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
