Lieutenant Colonel Gillman commanded with complete disregard for his personal safety during 21 days of sustained offensive combat operations that resulted in the defeat of the enemy’s 11th infantry Division, the Republican Guard, special Republican Guard Forces and Paramilitary forces defending Baghdad. His bravery and courage were instrumental in the success of the mission. Lieutenant Colonel Gillman’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
