Robert Gallagher parachuted into Panama during Operation Just Cause, served as a platoon sergeant with Task Force Ranger in the Somalia battle known by “Black Hawk Down,” and was wounded in the march on Baghdad, Iraq, in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. He died of natural causes in his home in Georgia on October 13, 2014.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Command Sergeant Major Robert Gallagher, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force while serving as Command Sergeant Major of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM during the Battle for Baghdad, Iraq, on 7 April 2003. Command Sergeant Major Gallagher’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
