Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (June 21, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard M. Grant (ASN: 34333694), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company *, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. At about 1600, on ** March 1943, near *****, Tunisia, a strong attack was attempted by the Germans through the sector held by Company *, preceded by heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire which lasted for about fifty minutes. The enemy force, estimated at one rifle company, attacked the positions using the potato masher, hand, demolition and “bouncing” grenades strongly supported by automatic weapons. During a brief penetration of the lines, Private Grant and eight other men of the company under the direction of a private drove the enemy back over the hill thus closing the gap in the line which was held by the company for the balance of the night until it’s relief came.
