(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Rod Andrew Coffey, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force while serving as Operations Officer, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in Iraq, on 7 April 2003. Major Coffey came under immediate and intense small arms, machine gun, mortar and rocket propelled grenade fire while coordinating a relief of Task Force 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. In spite of his broken leg and shrapnel injury, he directed artillery and Bradley fire while maneuvering a company team to lethal effect. His heroism and aggressive leadership was instrumental to the success of the relief mission and his gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
