The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles E. Kuhn (ASN: 0-1293610), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, First Battalion, First Regiment, First Special Service Force, in action against the enemy at Anzio, Italy, on 24 May 1944. Serving as a Battalion Executive Officer, Captain Kuhn exposed himself to great danger without regard to his own safety in order to reorganized the battalion. As the battalion was carrying out its assigned mission on the Anzio Beachhead breakthrough, it was subjected to withering small arms fire and concentration after concentration of artillery and mortar fire. Casualties were numerous and many key offices and men were among those killed or seriously wounded. Captain Kuhn moved over the fire-swept area issuing orders, appointing new leaders, and regrouping the small units into effective combat units without any consideration for his own safety. Reorganization completed, he proceeded alone on a forward reconnaissance so that more definite information would be available when the attack was resumed. During his reconnaissance an artillery aerial burst dazed him, but without faltering, he continued until he had gained adequate information which was instrumental in the subsequent attack being highly successful. The courage and keen perception of duty reflected great credit upon Captain Kuhn and the Army of the United States.
