The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Walter L. Gavitt, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 April 1943 near Sedjenane, Tunisia. During a heavy counter-attack, Sergeant Gavitt distinguished himself as an observer for his mortar section. Sergeant Gavitt bravely went through heavy enemy fire toward a dominating O.P. position which was located in front and far to the flank of our front lines and remained throughout the attack, successfully relaying firing data back to the guns even though at times his position was surrounded by enemy forces and he was in danger of being killed or captured. This brave action aided greatly in the success of repelling the enemy counter attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
