Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (December 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward J. Griffin (ASN: 0-1309613), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When his company, advancing under cover of darkness, was subjected to sudden enemy machine gun and sniper fire, Lieutenant Griffin fearlessly moved from his place of concealment and searched for the enemy forces in an attempt to destroy them. Although mortally wounded in this action, is unselfish conduct enabled his company to withdraw around the enemy’s flank and resulted in the saving of many of his men’s lives. Lieutenant Griffin’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
