The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Earle D. Greene (ASN: 0-273718), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from November to December 1943. When our forces were forced to withdraw from advanced positions, Captain Greene was charged with creating an artillery diversion. To accomplish this mission it was necessary for Captain Greene to occupy an observation post approximately two miles beyond our most advanced positions. Captain Greene remained at this Observation Post for two days under enemy artillery and small arms fire, concentrating the fire of his battery on enemy installations. Captain Greene’s courage and persistence in the face of great danger created the desired diversion and aided materially in delaying the enemy’s preparations for an attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
