Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (December 7, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant Clifford I. Gring (ASN: 6812987), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Djebel Murdjadjo, Algeria, 8 November 1942. During the Oran offensive, Sergeant Gring, temporarily compelled to fall out of a forced march which his unit was making, rejoined his unit and discovered his company subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire. Sergeant Gring located the source of fire and, on his own initiative and heedless of personal danger, advanced with hand grenades in an attempt to put this strongly fortified enemy position out of action. He was killed by snipers before he could gain his objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
