The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John D. Green (ASN: 17028052), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy east of Oran, Algeria, 10 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Corporal Green, a member of the forward observer’s detail, while under heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, displayed exceptional courage and coolness in carrying his lines forward to his battery commander; these lines enabled the battery commander to regulate artillery support required for the infantry. Corporal Green’s display of courage and coolness set an example for the other members of the detail. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
