The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Ernest J. Grubbs (ASN: 6926163), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 12 July 1943. When a 105-mm. self-propelled gun was struck by an enemy shell, Private Grubbs entered the vehicle in an attempt to rescue a wounded comrade. His unselfish action, at the cost of his life, exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
