The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Allston S. Goff (ASN: 0-282531), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. When the enemy had rendered his battery’s position untenable, Major Goff remained in a forward area exposed to the enemy and covered the successful withdrawal of his men to more favorable locations. After assuring himself that all personnel had evacuated he withdrew through heavy shell and small arms fire and, despite severe burns he had previously received, inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
