The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Joseph P. Gurka (ASN: 0-397660), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Randazzo, Sicily, on 14 August 1943. When exploding mines wounded a number of men advancing through a heavily mined enemy area, Captain Gurka fearlessly proceeded to their assistance and promptly administered first aid. His gallant action and exemplary conduct, despite great personal danger, undoubtedly saved the lives of several of the injured. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Gurka reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Gurka (ASN: 0-397660), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 8 June 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
