Godwin (ASN: 0-885783), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then First Sergeant] Arthur A. Godwin (ASN: 0-885783), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from February through July. During a night bayonet attack on an enemy strongpoint, Lieutenant Godwin assumed command of his company when the one remaining officer was wounded. Continuing the assault, Lieutenant Godwin seized an objective and consolidated his gains by organizing an adequate defense and establishing communicants to the rear. The outstanding leadership and courage displayed by Lieutenant Godwin materially aided in the successful completion of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
