The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General [then Colonel] Frank Upton Greer (ASN: 0-8423), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as Commanding Officer of the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. When his regiment was savagely attacked by enemy armored units, General Greer personally reconnoitered the situation and moved his command post to a position affording maximum observation, although exposed to constant enemy artillery fire and aerial attack. Despite a painful wound received in this action, General Greer remained in this position until the enemy attack was completely repulsed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
