The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) William B. Gara (ASN: 0-388398), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa during the period from January to April 1943. When it became necessary to reorganize several mine laying platoons into a hasty defense against an enemy attack to his exposed right flank, Captain Gara, while under severe enemy artillery fire and aerial bombardment, successfully developed a defensive position. Captain Gara’s efficient reorganization and excellent coordination of his men while under most adverse and hazardous circumstances were directly responsible for removal of a dangerous enemy threat. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Corps of Engineers) William B. Gara (ASN: 0-388398), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July 1943. Major Gara led an officer patrol ahead of our most advanced infantry positions and reconnoitered the condition of an airfield still under heavy enemy artillery fire. When a thorough examination revealed that runways had been prepared for demolition with 500 pound aerial bombs, Major Gara quickly traced the charges and rendered them harmless. His prompt and courageous action made it possible to use the airfield at the earliest possible moment, thus providing much-needed fighter cover for the Division. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
